England Test captain Ben Stokes, known for his role in Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has decided to skip the 2024 edition to manage his fitness and workload better. CSK expressed support for his choice via a statement on their website. However, while they haven’t confirmed whether Stokes will be released from their roster, the IPL has set November 26 as the deadline for teams to announce their retentions and releases for the 2024 season.

If Stokes isn’t released, CSK will maintain the option to retain him for the mega auction ahead of IPL 2025. Stokes showcased his batting prowess for England in the recent World Cup in India, marking a comeback from ODI retirement. Despite England facing tough challenges in the tournament, Stokes played a significant role, participating in six out of nine games and finishing as their second-highest run-scorer behind Dawid Malan. Even though he didn’t bowl in the tournament, Stokes accumulated an impressive tally of 304 runs across six innings, achieving two half-centuries and a century, scoring 64 against Australia, 108 against Netherlands, and 84 against Pakistan. His average stood at 50.66, with a strike rate of 89.14.
