England’s Topley will miss the T20 World Cup due to injury
The English seamer Reece Topley will not be going to Australia for the T20 World Cup, the ECB said on Wednesday. He tore a ligament in his left ankle, so he can’t run. Tymal Mills, a left-handed fast bowler who is 28 years old, was already on the tour as a backup. Topley has taken 22 wickets in as many T20 games. But he got hurt on Sunday when England was practising fielding before their warm-up game against Pakistan on Monday in Brisbane.
On Saturday in Perth, England will play Afghanistan in their first game of the tournament. In 2010, England won the Twenty20 World Cup by being the best team overall. Because of injuries, Sri Lanka had to find new players to play in place of both Danushka Gunathilaka and Kasun Rajitha. Chameera, the speed spearhead, had to sit out because she hurt her calf. When Zawar Farid broke his foot, the United Arab Emirates called up Fahad Nawaz to take his place.
Thursday is the last Super 12 qualification match. The United Arab Emirates will play Namibia, and Sri Lanka will play the Netherlands. Luke Wood of Lancashire has been added as a travelling reserve, the ECB said in a statement. “Results from the scan on Tuesday in Perth showed the injury,” the statement said.
